they say, write "your" story.
Well until a day not so long ago...i didn't have one. Well, at least not a whole one. I carried around small fragments and splinters of a fractured psyche.
hang on. lets go back...it all began in middle school. i found out early in life that my math was atrocious. science...meh. but reading... reading was my thing. i read like a fiend in middle school and high school. Agatha Christie, Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King...inspired minds to shock and awe. these stories that gripped you and drug your screaming mind through the bushes...captivated me.
then...all of a sudden...movies! my parents would rent a VCR for a weekend, finance 4000 VHS tapes on a 2 day rental, and we would binge till our eyes bled. that's when it all took hold of me. poltergeist, the fog, Amityville horror, Shining. these movies titillated the senses. but the one above all others...ALIEN. everything about this movie was perfect. i look back now and this movie set the ground rules for storytelling.
the next film to grab my attention was Blade Runner. what can i say...the soundtrack, the atmosphere, texture, the mood of cyber-noir still gives me chills to this day. (p.s. 2049 can only be described as BEAUTIFUL. in every way.)
these cinematic elements are my core. my inspiration.
flash forward to today.
i sit here, knee deep in my masterpiece. what i'm creating goes beyond anything i have ever seen. this story is 7 books easy. maybe even 8. i guess it all depends on the point of view. the deeper i research proper etiquette in story telling, the more rules i find.
they say "don't go beyond the readers patience". (this means keep it short)
they say don't write over a 14 year old comprehension. (isn't that part of the problem these days?)
they even have a "word count" that deems it readable, or not. 40K -100K. (unless your an established writer who makes the new rules)
SO MANY RULES. i hate rules. i mean, i get why some are in place. it keeps us from rambling on an on and...but isn't rule breaking the core of art? at some point someone said, maybe i doth not speaketh in this manner. (go away you english twit!)
every form of literature goes through form modification, prose altering and simple block building changes. why must i conform to these principals?
Ok, ok. I'm rambling. short story longer...i am writing this adventure for no other reason than i want to read it.
This is a dark tale. i hope that you find it harrowing, uplifting, unnerving, insightful, emotional, serene, hopeful and full of dread. i seek out the purity of each emotion that humanity can produce. pure love. sacrifice. hope. sorrow and hate. you will find characters in here that you will feel a connection with. they carry the traits we all have. at any given time, we produce an emotion so powerful that words can not describe them.
these expressive feelings that run across our minds can be fleeting. micro- emotions. this is what i try to describe as these poor souls spiral deeper into the abyss of survival.
so come on, dont be afraid. join me as i tell a tale that you will remember for eternity.
step inside The Warm Shadows. what could go wrong?
